Abstract   Sarcoma of uterus is a very rare malignant tumor arising from the muscle or connective tissue. It is known as the most malignant of all uterine tumors and there are many intriguing problems in diagnosis, clinical behavior and management of uterine sarcoma. Twenty-three cases of uterine sarcoma were investigated at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Seoul National University Hospital from January, 1971 to December, l990. The results were as follows: 1) Age distribution was from 25 to 76 years with the mean age of 47.4 years. 2) The distribution of uterine sarcoma by histologic type was 16 case(69.9%) for leiomyosar- coma, 4 cases(17.4%) for endometrial stromal sarcoma, 2 cases(8.7%) for malignant mixed mii 1lerian tumor and 1 case(4.3% ) of malignant lymphoma. 3) The common symptoms were abdominal palpable mass(47.8%), abnormal uterine bleeding (21.7%>, lower abdominal pain(17.4%) and urinary symptoms(13.0%). 4) The 14 patients(60.8%) were treated by surgery with chemotherepy, 7 cases(30.4%) were by surgery alone and 2(8.7%) were managed by surgery followed by chemotherapy and radiother- apy. 5) The distribution by FIGO clinical stage was 16 cases(69.6%) for stage I, 2 cases(8.7%) for stage II, 3 cases(13.0%) for stage III and 2 cases(19%) for stage IV. The mean survival time has been tended to be decreased with increasing stage. 6) The mean survival time seemed to be decreased with the increasing number of mitotic figures per 10 high power field.
